  • VAT Rules for Fitness

I only use the gym – will my price still increase?

Yes, unfortunately. Gym access has always been subject to VAT and should have been charged at 25% all along. However, because our memberships previously included both group classes and gym access, the overall VAT rate was lower. This is why your membership increases by 18% and not the full 25%.

What about the tax deduction everyone is talking about?

There is talk of a tax deduction, and that is correct. We expect an annual tax deduction of DKK 1,770 to be introduced by the tax authorities. It has not yet been officially approved but is expected to be decided in March. The plan is for the deduction to apply retroactively for all of 2026.

I’m under 30 — am I exempt from the new rules?

Yes and no. Gym access remains fully VAT-liable, while group classes are VAT-exempt for members under 30. We have calculated how many of our under-30 members primarily use group classes versus the gym. Based on this, the VAT rate lands at 21%. Since the previous VAT rate was 7%, your membership will increase by 14%.

What if my company pays for my membership?

It can definitely be beneficial to have your company pay. However, you must consult your accountant to check how much your company is allowed to provide in employee benefits per year.

Can I prepay multiple years before 31/12?

Unfortunately, it is not legal to prepay for 3 years. You may, however, prepay for one year as long as the membership starts in 2025.
